What size is a WhatsApp DP?
WhatsApp stores your display picture as a 640 by 640 pixel square. It is shown much smaller, as a small circle next to your name in chats, but uploading the full 640 by 640 keeps it sharp when someone taps to view it. WhatsApp re-compresses whatever you upload, so starting from a clean square at the right size gives the best result.
It is cropped to a circle
Like most apps, WhatsApp masks the square into a circle, so the four corners are cut off. Keep your face centred with some space around it and avoid putting text or logos near the corners. To reframe before resizing, use the crop tool with the 1:1 ratio.
How to resize
Choose your photo above. The 640 by 640 preset is already applied and the tool crops to fit, so a rectangular photo is centred and trimmed to a clean square instead of being squashed. Download it and set it as your DP from WhatsApp's profile screen.
Why your DP can look blurry
Usually the uploaded picture was smaller than 640 by 640 and had to be enlarged, or it was already heavily compressed by being forwarded through chats. Always start from the original photo rather than one saved from a chat, and if the file is very large, compress it lightly instead of letting WhatsApp do it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best size for a WhatsApp profile picture?
640 by 640 pixels, square. WhatsApp displays it as a circle at a smaller size, but 640 by 640 is what it stores, so uploading at that size keeps it sharp.
Why does WhatsApp crop my photo?
The DP has to be square and is then masked into a circle. This page resizes to a centred square first, so you can see exactly what will be kept before you upload.
Is the size the same for WhatsApp Business?
Yes, a WhatsApp Business profile picture uses the same 640 by 640 square.
Is my photo uploaded here?
No. The resize happens inside your browser on your own device, so your photo is never sent to a server.
