What size is a UK passport photo?
A printed UK passport photo is 35 by 45 mm, which is 413 by 531 pixels at 300 DPI. The same size is used across the EU and most of the Commonwealth, so a photo prepared for a UK passport also suits an Irish, Australian or Indian application.
Head size and framing
The face must measure between 29 and 34 mm from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, which is roughly two thirds to three quarters of the 45 mm height, and it must be centred and facing the camera squarely. Frame it with the crop tool, then set the exact pixels here.
Digital photos for the online service
If you apply online you upload a digital photo rather than a print. It must be a colour photo at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, between 50 KB and 10 MB, and unaltered by any software or filter. The 413 by 531 print size is therefore not enough on its own: for an online application, start from a large original and keep the same 35 by 45 shape at a higher pixel count.

A plain cream or light grey background, no shadows on your face or behind you, a neutral expression with your mouth closed, eyes open and visible, and nothing covering your face.
