What size is a US passport photo?

The United States uses a square photo, 2 by 2 inches, which is 600 by 600 pixels at 300 DPI. That is unusual: most of the world uses a rectangular 35 by 45 mm photo, so a photo taken for a British or Indian passport is the wrong shape for a US application and has to be re-cropped, not just scaled.

Head size and framing

Within that square, the head must measure between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, and the eyes should sit in the upper half of the frame. Use the crop tool with the 1:1 ratio to frame it, then resize here to land on exactly 600 by 600.

Digital photos for online forms

Online applications accept a square JPG that is at least 600 by 600 pixels, and they also cap the file size, so a very detailed photo may need compressing. Resize here first, then run it through the image compressor if the upload is rejected as too large.

The other rules

A plain white or off-white background, a neutral expression with both eyes open, normal clothing rather than a uniform, no glasses, and a photo taken within the last six months. Head coverings are allowed only for religious or medical reasons with a signed statement. Check the State Department's current checklist before you submit, since the details are updated from time to time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the US passport photo size in pixels?

600 by 600 pixels, which is 2 by 2 inches at 300 DPI. Online forms accept square photos from 600 by 600 upwards.

Can I use a 35 by 45 mm photo for a US passport?

Not as it is. A 35 by 45 mm photo is rectangular and the US requires a square, so it has to be re-cropped rather than scaled. Crop to 1:1 first, then resize here.

Are glasses allowed in a US passport photo?

No. Glasses have not been allowed in US passport photos since 2016, except with a signed doctor's note for a medical reason.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The resize runs inside your browser on your own device, which matters for an identity document.
